Who we are
Mission. Marie’s Mission is a diaper distribution program in Worcester, MA serving families who are dealing with the difficulties that come from having insufficient diapers. Marie’s Mission is named in loving memory of Marie Louise Galvin, who was still born in August of 2014. From this tragic loss came a program, started and ran by Marie’s family, that not only honors Marie but helps other babies and young children in her name. Marie’s Mission provides diapers and resources that support healthy early childhood development to the children of our community. Diapers are not covered by federal and state assistance programs such as WIC or food stamps, so Marie’s Mission is a way for struggling families to get this needed resource. Marie’s Missions helps to prevent both health and psycho-social consequences that can result from children not having sufficient diapers.
Day one to Today
Our Journey
Marie’s Mission had its first diaper distribution in March of 2015 where 1 package of diapers was given out. Marie’s Mission now gives out an average of 300 packages during the monthly distribution. Marie’s Mission is the only member of the National Diaper Bank Network in Central Massachusetts. We are also part of the Massachusetts Coalition of Diaper Banks working with them to provide advocacy and expansion of diaper availability to those in need. We have also made connections with other agencies to assist in providing diapers to a greater number of people as we work towards our goal of expanding into the diaper bank for local community agencies.
What started as a way to help the young children of our community has turned into so much than could have been imagined during our first distribution. We have developed a mission that gives not only to our guests but gives as much if not more to those who serve as part of the team. Ultimately, the love, kindness, fellowship, and sense of community that stems from Marie’s Mission is immeasurable and much greater than the number of diapers given out each month.
What we Do
In addition to diapers we provide other resources at our distribution including our literacy program that provides young children age appropriate books, workbooks, writing pads and other items to support their early education and literacy. We also have students from UMASS Medical School who attend each distribution and provide much needed health education. We provide a monthly clothing swap allowing those we serve to access donated clothing.
Not just Diapers
A Community
Who We Are
However, Marie’s Mission is more than just diapers. In the words of many of our guests what is given out at Marie’s Mission goes far beyond the diapers and other physical items. We have had many of our guests who have been moved to give back to the Mission that has given to them through volunteering, donations or assisting another guest. Marie’s Mission provides a safe and comfortable space to ask for help or to just connect with the community. Many guests have expressed that Marie’s Mission has provided the helping hand that they need for their children to thrive in the community. As a result of the commitment that many of our guests have shown Marie’s Mission when we took the step to form our board of directors in 2018 it was only fitting that we invited one of the guests who has been with us since our first year of the Mission to join.
